While all of BLACKPINK received the MBE honors from King Charles III, Rosé actually enjoys more privileges
On November 22 (local time), at Buckingham Palace, King Charles III presented the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) honors to all four members of BLACKPINK – Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé.
Here, King Charles also mentioned BLACKPINK in his speech and appreciated them being ambassadors for the U.K.’s Presidency of COP 26, and later as advocates for the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.
The Order of the British Empire is the British royal honors system, awarded to individuals for significant contributions to the British community, society, or outstanding achievements in politics, economics, culture and the arts, science, sports, and so on.
The Order of the British Empire has 5 levels (from highest to lowest: GBE, KBE/DBE, CBE, OBE, MBE). In the past, British artists such as The Beatles, Adele, and Ed Sheeran have been awarded the MBE.
However, according to The Washington Post, despite all BLACKPINK members receiving the MBE medals, they enjoy different privileges.
In particular, Jisoo, Jennie, and Lisa are only “honorary” members, and their MBE titles are seen as symbolic recognition, similar to that given to foreign citizens.
However, Rosé is a dual citizen of New Zealand (one of the 14 countries where the British monarch is the head of state), and so receives the full honor and privileges of the title.
Thus, the singer has the right to use the name “Roseanne Park MBE” or be referred to as “Member of the Order of the British Empire Roseanne Park.”
Rosé will also receive special recognition and treatment in diplomatic situations. She is granted the status of a full member of the organization.
