Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun opened up about her early days in the group and how her older members’ teasing once left her in tears, now looking back with laughter and growth.
In the April 16 episode of YouTube series “Hyoyeon’s Level Up,” titled “Seohyun Comes to Keep Hyoyeon in Check (with Banmal) / Let’s Eat EP.31 – Girls’ Generation Seohyun,” Seohyun joined Hyoyeon to reminisce about their time as trainees and young idols.
Seohyun Used to Cried Because of Being Teased?
“The older members were a bit mischievous when we were together.,” Hyoyeon said, prompting Seohyun to admit, “I cried a lot. I couldn’t handle the jokes and teasing.”
One memory stood out: “On my birthday, we were on tour in Japan. Everyone gathered for my birthday party, and I went to the bathroom. When I came back, the older members were all gone. And no cake! Everyone disappeared, and I was almost in tears. Then suddenly they came out from behind the curtain and celebrated.”

Hyoyeon laughed, “I was so anxious just now. Really thought they might have left.” Seohyun quipped, “Unni… let’s only talk about the good stuff.”
Looking back, Seohyun now sees how those experiences helped her toughen up. “Now…I don’t even cry. I can also joke around too. Back then… ‘Why are they doing this? Did I do something wrong?’ I thought like that.”
How Seohyun Get Over ‘Banmal’ Difficulty?
They also discussed Seohyun’s journey toward using banmal (informal speech) with her older members, a shift from her once strictly formal language. “When I was doing a project, I had to act as the same age as the senior actor even though there was an age difference. I would always say, ‘Hello, sir.’ And they said not to do that!
They said, ‘Speak like friends it’ll make the acting more comfortable.’ So I forced myself to say, ‘Did you eat… yet?’ Once I broke that barrier… I thought, ‘This is no big deal.’” she shared.

When Hyoyeon challenged her to use casual speech on the spot, Seohyun obliged, leaving Hyoyeon adorably flustered.
Seohyun explained that while she now texts members like Tiffany, Sooyoung, and Yuri in banmal, she still mixes styles with others like Yoona. “I thought if I don’t start now, I might never do it,” she said, showing her continued growth in confidence and closeness with the group.
From tearful pranks to casual banter, Seohyun’s story highlights the enduring bond, and evolution, within Girls’ Generation.
