“Shōgun” Dominates with 18 Wins at Emmy Awards + No Wins for Korean-Related Nominees

The Emmy Awards took place on the morning of Sep 16th (KST) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California. Known as the Academy Awards of the U.S. television industry, the Emmy Awards are split into the Primetime Emmy Awards, which recognize actors and directors, and the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which honor technical and production staff.
One of the most anticipated categories in Korea was the nomination of Robert Downey Jr. for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for his role in “The Sympathizer”, directed by Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. Despite Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of four characters, he did not win the award, which went to Lamorne Morris of “Fargo”.

Korean-American actress Greta Lee was also nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her role in “The Morning Show” but lost to Elizabeth Debicki of “The Crown”.
The documentary “Beyond Utopia”, which involves Korean-American expert Sue Mi Terry, was also nominated in the Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking category but did not win.
The biggest winner was Disney+’s “Shōgun”, which swept 18 awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, making it the most awarded single production in Emmy history. When Hiroyuki Sanada won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Korean-American actor Steven Yeun handed him the trophy. Sanada praised the collaborative nature of “Shōgun” as a project bridging East and West.
