In an interview with TenAsia, PD Kim Jae-won responded to the controversy surrounding the inclusion of non-celebrities on the show, clarifying that as long as participants are authentic and charismatic, there is no problem. He said, “No matter their fame, everyone is the same when it comes to relationships.”
The dating reality series, where participants must form couples to leave a “hellish” island, raised concerns about its authenticity, especially with several known public figures like Lee Si-an and Yook Jun-seo in the cast. Despite these concerns, the production team affirmed the sincerity of the relationships. “We don’t interfere with the course of relationships,” Kim noted. “Even if things unfold differently than the audience expects, we stay hands-off to keep it real.”
One of the season’s key moments was when Yook Jun-seo and Lee Si-an shared a bed at Heaven’s Gate, surprising the producers with how quickly their relationship blossomed. PD Park Su-ji admitted, “It wasn’t shocking, but it was surprising,” and added that the producers had a similar reaction to the MCs. Later, Lee Si-an expressed her desire for a real relationship with Yook Jun-seo, saying, “I would love to date him and go public.” This has sparked curiosity among fans about whether they became a couple after the show.
Kim Jae-won also shared that screening participants, especially non-celebrities, can be difficult because they cannot access personal records. To ensure participants are genuinely single, he added, “We make it clear that there are significant penalties for lying about being in a relationship. They know the consequences, so we trust them to be honest.”
