Why has she been absent from the big screen for so long? To this, Song Hye-kyo explained, “It’s not that I avoided movies. I kept working on dramas, so schedules didn’t align. I missed out on a lot of opportunities. It seems like I was in sync with dramas at the time,” dismissing any special reason for the hiatus.

While her film appearances were sparse, Song Hye-kyo consistently appeared in dramas such as “Descendants of the Sun” (2016), “Encounter” (2018), and “Now, We Are Breaking Up” (2021). She also surprised everyone by taking on her first “revenge” genre role in the Netflix series “The Glory” (2022).

Audiences praised her for showing a side they hadn’t seen before. Her chilling portrayal of a character bent on revenge earned her acclaim and reignited attention toward her acting skills. She won numerous awards, including Best Actress in the TV category at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards and the Grand Prize at the 2nd Blue Dragon Series Awards. “The Glory” undeniably marked a turning point in her acting career.

Song Hye-kyo’s most recent project is “Dark Nuns”, a leap into the occult genre. Regarding her decision to continue exploring genres, Song Hye-kyo shared, “Before ‘The Glory’, I had done a lot of melodramas. Playing similar characters repeatedly made acting less enjoyable for me. If I felt that way, I thought viewers would find it even less interesting.”

She continued, “After trying a revenge story in ‘The Glory’ and exploring scenes I hadn’t done before, it became really fun. Showing new expressions felt exhilarating. It’s been a long time since I genuinely enjoyed acting. That’s why I didn’t want to immediately return to love stories after ‘The Glory’.”

According to Song Hye-kyo, she is highly satisfied with her choices. Reflecting on filming “Dark Nuns”, she said, “I was worried about whether I could express emotions explosively and handle intense fight scenes. But when I was on set, it felt like I’d been holding back for so long. It all came out so smoothly. It felt like taking a refreshing shot of soda”.
