While still riding high on her current popularity, Kim Tae Ri has already announced her next project, drawing significant public attention. Her upcoming work is the animation “Necessary for This Star”. She works with actor Hong Kyung in this project.
Both actors, known as close colleagues from the same agency, previously worked together in SBS’s drama “Revenant”, which aired last year.

Kim Tae Ri and Hong Kyung’s new work, “Necessary for This Star”, is an animation film depicting the world’s most distant long-distance romance between astronaut Nan Young and musician Jay. It has garnered attention as Netflix’s first Korean animation work.
After pouring everything into “Jeongnyeon: The Star Is Born”, Kim Tae Ri moves on to a new challenge. Known for her versatility across dramas and films, she once again proves the phrase “Kim Tae Ri defines the genre” with her choice to venture into voice acting for an animation.
Kim Tae Ri lends her voice to the protagonist of “Necessary for This Star”, directed by Han Ji Won, and will connect with audiences worldwide. Set for release next year, the Netflix production follows Nan Young, an astronaut in space, and her love story with Jay, a musician on Earth. It marks Kim Tae Ri’s first voice-acting role, as she conveys a fateful love that spans between space and Earth.
Hong Kyung voices Jay, Nan Young’s love interest in the film.

The story delves into their tender relationship. Nan Young, voiced by Kim Tae Ri, is an astronaut selected for a Mars exploration project in 2050. Nan Young yearns to uncover traces of her mother, who failed to return to Earth after a past space mission. Meanwhile, Jay, voiced by Hong Kyung, is a musician who repairs retro audio equipment. Through Nan Young’s mother’s turntable, the two meet fatefully, developing a poignant love that transcends the vast distance between Earth and Mars.
The production process for “Necessary for This Star” took an unconventional approach. Kim Tae Ri and Hong Kyung recorded their voices first to bring out the characters’ emotions and circumstances vividly. Additionally, live-action footage was filmed to merge the actors’ images with their animated counterparts, adding depth to Nan Young and Jay’s portrayal.
Director Han Ji Won explained the creative process during Netflix’s new work introduction event at the Busan International Film Festival on October 4. The director shared, “We explored ways to draw inspiration from Kim Tae Ri and Hong Kyung not just for their voices but also for constructing the characters’ actions and performances. We even had the actors perform pivotal scenes, where their acting was explosively realistic in some cases.”
