Actress Park Min-young has made headlines for her remarkable weight loss as she takes on the role of a cancer patient in an upcoming drama
This has brought attention to other stars who underwent rigorous diets for their on-screen characters.
On Nov 23rd, it was reported that Park Min-young had lost a significant amount of weight, down to 37kg, for her role as cancer patient Kang Ji-won in the drama “Marry My Husband”, which is scheduled to air in January next year.
In the photos released by the production team, Kang Ji-won is seen in patient clothing with a haggard face and a pale complexion. The portrayal of the emotional collapse due to a challenging illness is expected to draw viewers into the character’s struggles.
“Marry My Husband” revolves around a woman who was murdered after witnessing her husband’s affair with her best friend. She returns to ten years ago and begins her second life. The drama is based on the popular web novel of the same name.
The anticipation for “Marry My Husband” has risen significantly due to Park Min-young’s efforts. The drama is set to premiere on Jan 1st, 2024.
Kang Ki-young, who played his first villain role in tvN’s “The Uncanny Counter 2”, also underwent weight loss for his character. He played the role of Hwang Pil-kwang, a third-level evil spirit possessing powerful psychokinesis that can absorb the Counters’ abilities.
In an interview with journalists after the conclusion of “The Uncanny Counter 2” in August, Kang Ki-young mentioned that he worked hard on exercising because he had many exposure scenes in the drama. He revealed that he lost 10kg and admitted that he looked awkwardly skinny. However, in the drama, he showcased a muscular and tight abdomen, capturing viewers’ attention.
Kang Ki-young mentioned that his body fat percentage was around 5% at the time, preparing as if he were participating in a competition. He explained that he gained 5kg back for his next project.
Rising star Kang Hoon also made efforts to lose weight for his role. He appeared in Netflix’s drama “A Time Called You”, which was released last September, as high school student Jung In-gyu and attempted weight loss to fit the character.
Besides, actor Park Seo-joon is reported to have lost 7kg for his role as Min-seong in the movie “Concrete Utopia”. He aimed to shed weight because he did not want to have a muscular and firm appearance when thinking about the character Min-seong. Actor Lee Joon also revealed that he attended an action school and lost 8kg to portray Min Do-hyuk in the drama “The Escape of the Seven”.
