According to a survey conducted by Gallup Korea from November 19 to 21, 2024, asking 1,001 adults over 18 years old about their favorite TV programs (with up to 2 responses allowed), “Jeong Nyeon”, a drama centered on Korean gukgeuk, topped the list with a 5.5% preference rating. The show had rapidly risen to second place just two weeks after its premiere last month and achieved first place right after its final episode this month, ending on a high note.

“Jeong Nyeon” is set in the mid to late 1950s after the Korean War and tells the story of a natural-born voice genius, Yoon Jeong-nyeon (Kim Tae-ri), and a hardworking prodigy, Heo Young-seo (Shin Ye-eun), who grow and develop through competition and collaboration within the Maeran Korean Gukgeuk Troupe led by Kang So-bok (Ra Mi-ran). The drama garnered attention for its performers, who trained for 1 -3 years in pansori, dance, and Korean opera to portray the multifaceted members of the troupe. Each episode featured dazzling stage performances, and the full version of the opera scenes, including unreleased footage, was made available on the OTT platform TVing. The drama is based on a webtoon of the same name, which won the 2024 Bucheon Comics Award.
