On Dec 5th, BTS’s agency Big Hit Music announced through Weverse that RM, Jimin, V and Jungkook will enlist as active-duty soldiers for their military service. RM and V are scheduled to enlist on Dec 11th, while Jimin and Jungkook will enlist on the following day, Dec 12th.
Although BTS received a postponement of their military service until the age of 30 under the revised military service law in 2020, youngest member Jungkook was the first among the remaining members to announce his enlistment. Born in 1997, Jungkook’s decision to enlist at the age of 26 is relatively early compared to other male celebrities who typically announce their enlistment around the age of 30 in Korean age. Therefore, his decision has sparked curiosity and surprise among the public.
Jungkook has proven his potential as a solo artist throughout 2023, achieving success with “Seven” and “Golden”. Despite being a part of BTS, Jungkook is making a name for himself as a solo artist, leading to some expressing disappointment at his early enlistment.
Jungkook’s decision to enlist early is aimed at reducing BTS’s hiatus due to military service. Big Hit Music expressed their hope for the group’s full-scale activities to resume around 2025 after the members fulfill their military duties, as indicated by the recent contract renewal.
Jungkook explained his decision, “I feel relieved because I gave my all and am now going with a somewhat organized feeling. I have no regrets. I think it’s a very good decision.” Jungkook’s sacrifice for the team received praise from fans.
In 2023, Jungkook showcased his potential beyond BTS as a solo artist, making it a meaningful year for him. While there may be a sense of regret, his decision is a natural part of fulfilling his civic duty as a Korean citizen. Now, it’s time to bid farewell to Jungkook as he embarks on his final moments before serving in the military.
