‘The Story of Lady Ok’ Dominates Overseas OTT Platforms, Reigns as Number 1 in Japan and Beyond

JTBC’s drama “The Story of Lady Ok” has swept the top rankings on both domestic and international OTT platforms, including in Japan, as it nears its finale with just two episodes left.
Japan’s OTT platform, U-NEXT, announced that “The Story of Lady Ok” claimed the top spot in both the drama and Hallyu-Asian viewership rankings. The historical Korean drama has successfully garnered a strong response in the Japanese market.

Consistent Strong Performance on Global OTT Platforms
Not only in Japan, but “The Story of Lady Ok” has also maintained its number 1 ranking in the drama category on global OTT platforms like Coco and Plus in the Americas, Europe, and Oceania, continuing its success since its premiere.
The drama follows the story of Gu Deok-yi (played by Lim Ji-yeon), a former slave who hides her identity to live as a high-class lady, Ok Tae-young. The relationship with Cheon Seung-hwi (played by Choo Young-woo), who is devoted to protecting her, is central to the plot.
The strong performances by the main cast, including Lim Ji-yeon, Choo Young-woo, Kim Jae-won, and Yeonwoo, have heightened the drama’s immersive appeal.

Domestic Performance
“The Story of Lady Ok” began its broadcast in November of last year with a solid 4.2% viewership rating.
Thanks to its gripping storyline and stellar performances, the ratings steadily increased. In particular, episode 10 achieved its highest rating of 11.1%, breaking into double digits for the first time.
The most recent episode, episode 14, drew significant attention as it showed Ok Tae-young in a high-stakes situation, nearing the end of the series.

Global Success of Korean Traditional Historical Drama Format
Although “The Story of Lady Ok” is a fictional historical drama, not based on actual historical events, the show has garnered praise for following the traditional Korean historical drama format. Its distinct Korean aesthetics and narrative have resonated strongly with global audiences.
The international success of the drama is seen as another testament to the competitive marketability of Korean content.
“The Story of Lady Ok” will air its final two episodes, 15 and 16, on January 25 and 26. A special broadcast featuring behind-the-scenes footage and commentary from the cast will air on February 1, offering fans a glimpse into the production and easing the disappointment of the series’ conclusion.
