T.O.P Breaks Silence on Controversy and Reflects on Growth During First Fan Event in Years

T.O.P, known for his powerful presence as a member of BigBang, recently broke his long silence by addressing past controversies in front of fans for the first time. The artist, who faced a major scandal in 2017 involving illegal marijuana use resulting in a 10-month suspended prison sentence, has kept a low profile since departing from BigBang in 2023.
Despite the controversy, T.O.P continued music activities with BigBang, including the release of the critically acclaimed single “Still Life,” even after leaving YG Entertainment. However, since officially announcing his departure from the group, he remained mostly out of the public eye—until his recent role as Thanos in the highly anticipated second season of Netflix’s Squid Game 2.

T.O.P’s comeback included multiple interviews, marking his first media engagement in years, and a surge in promotional activities, including events held in Los Angeles in late May 2025. Fans eagerly welcomed this return, especially when T.O.P openly discussed his past struggles during a May 29 Squid Game pre-release event.
When asked about his portrayal of Thanos, T.O.P revealed the depth of preparation involved in bringing the complex character to life. He explained, “Thanos is like a failed soul, a young person addicted to drugs, struggling with anxiety and mood swings. I researched addiction and the emotional turmoil it brings to infuse authenticity into the character.” T.O.P also shared how the role forced him to confront his own mistakes and sparked a journey of self-reflection and healing.
“Playing Thanos required a lot of courage, but Director Hwang’s trust gave me the confidence I needed. Through this role, I was able to face my past and feel ready to move forward to a new chapter,” he said.
T.O.P’s candidness about his personal growth and willingness to face difficult topics has earned praise from fans and the public alike, signaling a hopeful new beginning for the artist.
