On December 4, MBCdrama, an official YouTube channel of broadcasting station MBC, uploaded the behind-the-scenes video for episodes 3 and 4 of the viral K-drama “When the Phone Rings”.
The video started by showcasing leading actors Yoo Yeon-seok (playing Baek Sa-eon) and Chae Soo-bin (playing Hong Hee-joo) preparing for a scene where they drink beer. Yoo Yeon-seok was seen attentively checking Chae Soo-bin’s lips for beer stains, displaying their playful and harmonious chemistry.
In the behind-the-scenes footage of the “When the Phone Rings” bed scene, Chae Soo-bin, who plays Hong Hee-joo, performed a scene where she aggressively pulled a pillow that Yoo Yeon-seok was lying on. The action came off rougher than expected, causing her to burst into laughter.
She jokingly said, “What if you turn your head less? Do I have to look at you?” as she suppressed her laughter to finish the scene.
While monitoring the footage, the production team, Yoo Yeon-seok, and Chae Soo-bin couldn’t hold back their laughter while reviewing the bed scene. During the shoot, Yoo Yeon-seok added an unscripted touch by pulling a blanket over Chae Soo-bin, a sweet ad-lib that wasn’t in the script.

The duo continually exchanged ideas and worked on their chemistry in each scene. In a scene where room service enters the hotel room, Yoo Yeon-seok pushed the room service cart in a humorous manner, contrasting with his character Baek Sa-eon’s usual charisma, creating a comedic moment that added levity.
Meanwhile, the MBC drama “When the Phone Rings” tells the story of Baek Sa-eon (played by Yoo Yeon-seok), a seemingly perfect spokesperson for the presidential office who doesn’t even speak with his wife, and Hong Hee-joo (played by Chae Soo-bin), a sign language interpreter. Their lives take a turn when they receive a mysterious threatening phone call, leading them to rediscover their appreciation for one another. This “romance thriller” blends elements of romance and suspense.
Regrettably, despite its popularity, the broadcast schedule of “When the Phone Rings” has been cancelled for 2 weeks in a row due to Korea’s political issues and the airing of a documentary about Nobel prize winner Han Kang.
