On November 28th, Newsen reported that the new girl group BABYMONSTER from YG Entertainment surpassed the records of their predecessor, BLACKPINK. BABYMONSTER officially debuted in the early morning of November 27th with the MV “Batter Up.”
BABYMONSTER’s debut song quickly claimed the top spot on iTunes charts in 21 countries and reached the top 5 on the World Wide Chart. The MV garnered an impressive 22.59 million views within just 24 hours of its release.
BABYMONSTER has now become the K-pop group with the highest views for the debut MV, surpassing the achievements of their senior group BLACKPINK and other groups like aespa (21.4 million views for “Black Mamba”), NMIXX (19.7 million views for “O.O” MV), and ITZY with “Dalla Dalla” (17.1 million views).
Even before their debut, BABYMONSTER attracted attention due to their participation in a reality show produced by YG Entertainment, where the group showcased their excellent skills.
While BABYMONSTER achieved significant views, their digital music performance fell short. The song “Batter Up” contains a confident message of changing the game and the landscape of the global music market. The track, characterized by YG Entertainment’s unique hip-hop sound, catchy hooks, and interesting bridges, faced criticism for its outdated melodies, concepts, and visuals, resembling MVs released years ago by BLACKPINK, ITZY, 4Minute, KARA, and others. The voices, individual colors, and faces of the six members in the MV were also deemed not outstanding.
As a result, the song temporarily did not perform well on Korean music charts, and “Batter Up” did not even make it to the Melon chart. Meanwhile, BLACKPINK, their senior group, continued to dominate the music charts shortly after their comeback.
BABYMONSTER is the first girl group introduced by YG Entertainment after BLACKPINK, gaining significant attention as the junior group of BLACKPINK, which currently dominates the global entertainment market.
Prior to BABYMONSTER, YG introduced two girl groups, 2NE1 and BLACKPINK, both of which left a lasting impact on the music industry.
2NE1 debuted in 2009 with their first song, “Fire.” The group then released numerous hits such as “I Don’t Care,” “Can’t Nobody,” “Applause,” “You And I,” “I’m The Best,” “Falling In Love,” and “Come Back Home,” with most of their songs becoming hits. They established a unique identity with a distinct YG style, setting them apart from other girl groups at that time.
Subsequently, BLACKPINK debuted and expanded their reach internationally, becoming the most outstanding girl group in terms of fame and achievements. Starting with their debut single “SQUARE ONE,” which included the theme songs “Whistle” and “Boombayah,” BLACKPINK continued to captivate audiences with “Playing with Fire,” “As If It’s Your Last,” “DDU-DU DDU-DU,” “Kill This Love,” and “Shut Down.”
According to Newsen, BLACKPINK consistently topped charts with each song release, proving themselves to be a global phenomenon. The group also set a record as the K-pop girl group with the largest audience during their tours (1.8 million).
